British Airways first in with iPhone 3G platform

British Airways has become the first airline to develop a fully functional platform for the Apple iPhone 3G.

The new service via BA.com will allow handset users to access real-time flight departure and arrival information as well as book flights.

Two members of BA’s information management team, Andy Qua and Justin Davis, spearheaded the project after Apple announced details of the developer application programme in May.

The launch is likely to be the first of many new apps for the iPhone which is currently gearing up for a second wave of marketing with the release of the second version of the handset.

BA chief information officer Paul Coby said: “The iPhone is revolutionising mobile communications and allows us to provide instant access to arrivals and departures information which will enhance the experience of travelling with BA."

"We're always seeking to improve the service our customers enjoy by the smart use of innovative technology and the iPhone is a fantastic way to achieve this."

Meanwhile, Tripadvisor's Local Picks service will also be available on the new iPhone App Store from today.

The service will allow users to view the best local restaurants in any location based on ratings from the Tripadvisor community.
